Boss Stone delighted as Doughboys secure big win in 'most difficult game so far'

Jake Stone was relieved to see his on-song Wellingborough Town team pass their toughest test yet in beating promotion rivals Sutton Coldfield Town 2-1 at the Dog & Duck on Saturday.

The Doughboys came out on top against their nearest rivals in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division, and now stand an incredible 13 points clear at the head of the table.

Glenn Walker fired the home side into the lead just before half-time, only for Sutton Coldfield to level on 57 minutes through Romehl Critchlow.

Parity only lasted for five minutes though before goal machine Jack O'Connor came to the party once again, heading home what would prove to be the winner on 62 minutes.

It was the central defender's ninth league goal of the campaign!

As well extending their lead, the win means the Doughboys now have a whopping 21 point cushion between themselves and Rugby Borough, who are one place outside the play-offs.

"That was definitely our most difficult game so far," Stone told Doughboys TV.

"They are a good side, they have good players, they have some quality that can come off the bench as well, so we had to be on it from minute one to the end, there was no respite.

"I think we made it more difficult for ourselves by not putting the ball in the net and getting that third goal, but I can't fault any of the lads.

"They worked their socks off and everybody played their part.

"We are going to need that in games like that, because they are going to get tighter.

"the weather is going to change and things are going to be a bit more of a battle, so it was really pleasing to see us having to be a bit more gritty at the moment.

"Sutton Coldfield will be disappointed to have lost the game, but in truth I think we were the better side and deserved to win.

"It is a brilliant result."

The Doughboys now have a free midweek, their first since mid-September, before they make the trip to sixth-placed Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday.

Shepshed were held to a 0-0 draw at Corby Town on Saturday.
