Boss Mettam believes Steelmen ready to hit the ground running in league opener

Leon Mettam believes supporters will get to see what his Corby Town team is really all about now the competitive action has started.

The Steelmen produced a stunning second-half performance on Saturday, scoring six goals as Step 5 side FC Peterborough were swept aside 7-1 in the FA Cup at Steel Park.

And on Wednesday night the Steelmen are back at home again, this time to kick off their Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division campaign with a clash against newly-promoted Boston Town (ko 7.45pm).

It has been a long and very hot summer for the Corby players as they have strived to reach peak fitness ahead of the new season, and Mettam is confident the players are ready to hit the ground running.

"We are 12 weeks or so into pre-season, and when I was a player I hated pre-season," admitted the Steelmen boss to @corbytownfc.

"You are turning up just to train and get your fitness and it is hard.

"The weather is hot and it's not until the real stuff starts that you will see what the lads are all about.

"As much as you try and get it into them that every game matters, we have all been there where you try and amble through pre-season, and you try and do enough just to get through it.

"So, yeah it all starts on Wednesday which is a strange scenario to be starting on a midweek, but it is the same for everybody.

"It is another game at home and it would be nice to kick off with a win.

"Since we have come in, we have been quite good on a Wednesday night so hopefully that carries on and we can come out on the right side of it and with three points."

Like Corby, Boston were involved in FA Cup action on Saturday, winning 2-1 at United Counties League Premier Division South outfit Daventry Town thanks to two goals from striker Matt Cotton.

The Lincolnshire side are playing their first match at Step 4 following their promotion last season following their UCL Premier Division North title success.

The match could be the first chance the Steelmen fans have the chance to see new signing Ben Williams in action, following his signing after leaving Harborough Town at the end of last season.
