Dowson says Saints ‘workhorse’ Clark deserves the rewards coming his way

Clark was named man of the match in the win against Gloucester last Saturday, scoring his first Premiership try in the process.

The former Leeds Carnegie flanker is currently in a rich vein of form, cementing his place in the Saints back row.

He captained the England Saxons in two games at the end of January and has admitted he is now finding a real rhythm.

Dowson is delighted to see Clark performing so well and has nothing but praise for his team-mate.

“Calum said last week he never gets a try and he never gets man of the match and he got both on Saturday,” said the 32-year-old.

“It’s well deserved, he’s a great character, an absolute workhorse and a leader within the squad.

“He’s had hard times in the past and I’m sure he’s enjoying these good times.”

Clark and Dowson are being driven on by the emergence of young, hungry and talented back row forwards.

And Dowson is conscious of making sure he keeps up to speed with the likes of Ben Nutley and Teimana Harrison.

“Players like Ben and Teimana are always pushing me,” he said.

“I’m always checking what they’re doing and making sure I’m up to speed.

“You want to have that young squad, you want to have that longevity at the club and I think we’re starting to build that.

“They’re all outstanding talents and they’ve all been brought into the environment and culture of the club.

“They’re very professional lads, all top boys and they’ve worked hard for their opportunities.

“They don’t get many opportunities because of the strength in the squad, but with the international guys away it’s great to see them come on and make a difference.”
