The club have recruited strongly during the summer, adding the likes of Lions star George North and Samoan scrum-half Kahn Fotuali’i to their squad.

With mainstays Soane Tonga’uiha and Brian Mujati vacating the forwards department, boss Jim Mallinder took the opportunity to pour more money into his backline.

North and Fotuali’i, along with the knowledge of former Clermont coach Alex King, should add real firepower to the attack, which already includes a number of England internationals.

And Day, who was delighted to see the likes of Stephen Myler and Lee Dickson impress on the Red Rose’s recent tour of South America, feels the signs are good for a balanced Saints side.

“I was really glad for Stephen to get his cap,” said the experienced lock. “He deserved it.

“He had a really good season last year and Jim’s already given him a vote of confidence this year that he’s the stand-out No.10 and fingers crossed he’ll go from strength to strength.

“I thought Lee Dickson was superb on that tour as well, so we’ve got real strength at nine and 10 now and hopefully that will show this year and we’ll have a real roundedness to our game.”

Day and Co returned to training on Monday as their preparations for the new campaign start to take shape.

And the 30-year-old, who helped Saints reach the Premiership final last season, says it was nice to see some fresh faces at Franklin’s Gardens.

“It’s always good to have a few new players to meet up with,” said Day.

“You catch up with some old mates, but there are a few personalities missing so it’s a time of transition.

“All the internationals are off, but there was one or two knocking around on Monday. They just can’t wait to get back.

“Some big personalities have left, some others have arrived so hopefully the next few weeks of hard work will bring us together pretty quickly.”
