Davies: Gloucester deserved to beat Saints

The Cherry and Whites claimed a 26-24 victory at Kingsholm thanks to Billy Twelvetrees’ last-gasp penalty.

It was a controversial ending to the game as referee Martin Fox angered Saints with his failure to award an offside from the kick-off and made a big call at the final scrum.

Twelvetrees kept his nerve to slot the resulting tee kick, sending Saints to their first defeat of the season, giving Gloucester their first win.

It was one Davies felt his men merited, as he said: “I think, overall, we deserved the win. There were a lot of chances we missed in the game, particularly in the first half there were two clear-cut opportunities we created but didn’t finish off.

“What was vitally important was that we got the win.

“It was a very exciting game. It was a very dramatic ending to what was a fabulous game.”

Davies was asked about Saints’ fury at the final penalty award, which was given for Lee Dickson being offside as he chased a ball he felt Ben Morgan had kicked back into the scrum.

And the Gloucester director of rugby said: “I could show you about 30 incidents I wouldn’t be happy with. Sometimes you get the rub of the green, sometimes you don’t.

“More importantly from my perspective - you’ll always get frustrated with decisions, it’s the nature of the game - I felt we deserved to win overall with the performance we put in.”
