Twenty20 rule change is good for the game says Smith

Previously, the super over concept has only been utilised at the competition’s finals day but as from next year the group fixtures, should they finish in a tie, will be decided by a six-ball shootout rather than each side receiving one point apiece.

And Smith, who is an unashamed fan of the shortest format, thinks this can only add to the whole experience.

He said: “It’s exciting for everyone and the more innovations we can have in Twenty20 cricket the better.

“It’s good for the spectators, without a doubt, and they’re the ones that the game is for.

“I was at the the finals day in 2011 when two games were decided by a super over and it was great to watch, and in a spectator-led competition this can only be a good rule to have.”

Tied games are no rarity for the County’s players - three games finished in this way in 2011 - but while the administrator in him hopes that there will be others like this next year, former player Smith admitted that he wouldn’t want to be involved.

He added: “Hopefully we won’t have to use one of these because they’re obviously very hit and miss.

“But if it happens there’s no doubt that it would be an exciting thing to be involved in.”
