The South African was signed on a limited overs only contract for this season but an injury to Ian Butler freed up a slot for an overseas player and Levi has stepped into the breach.

He made his first-class debut against Sri Lanka last week where he hit an assured half century and he followed that up with 43 on the first day of his County Championship bow against Warwickshire.

That could lead to a dilemma in the next few weeks as to whether Levi continues to don the whites and that is something he wouldn;t shy away from.

He said: “Originially, Rips (David Ripley) had spoken about the Sri Lankan game as a chance to get some cricket in during the break between the Twenty20s and I enjoyed it.

“With a couple problems in signing overseas bowlers and guys betting pulled back by their countries, there was maybe an opportunity to get some four-day stuff in.

“It went alright against Sri Lanka and I was asked if I wanted to play, I haven’t played it for a while but it’s a good opportunity for me.

“The more cricket the better and when you come to England ther’s plenty of it.

“To get the chance to play in the week and not just once a week can only help and it’s gratefully taken.”

As for the future, Levi is unsure what direction that will take and is keeping an open mind as to a possible return to Wantage Road.

He continued: “I’ll find out in the next couple of months back home what tournaments are coming up.

“I haven’t played four-day cricket for a year and a half at home but I enjoy it as I dot have to play shots from ball one and there’s not as much expectation on me.

“It’s easy for me to get over here so we’ll just have to see what happens in the next few weeks.”
