In-form Northants all-rounder Willey victorious on England Lions debut

Willey took one for 27 from his eight overs, capturing the wicket of opener Jahurul Islam for 36 as Bangladesh A were crushed by 202 runs.

And it was captain Luke Wright who provided a compelling case for a return to the national 50-over side as he thumped a 68-ball unbeaten 143 and then took two wickets..

The Sussex man blasted 10 sixes and 11 fours, reaching his century from 51 balls, before helping bowl out the tourists an emphatic distance short of their target.

The Lions posted 353 for four after Wright and in-form Yorkshireman Gary Ballance, who made 115, cracked 225 in 121 balls at the back end of the innings.

Ballance, uncapped by England but in the squad for this month’s two Twenty20 fixtures against Australia, reached his century from 81 balls as a Bangladesh A side - containing nine full internationals - were put to the sword.

The century makers came together with England coasting along at just under a four-an-over rate, at 112 for three in the 29th over.

But in the next 20 overs Wright and Ballance upped the ante considerably - scoring at more than 11 runs per over - with the captain at one point hitting Mominul Haque for a hat-trick of sixes in an over that cost 24.

Wright’s last one-day international was over two years ago, as he has instead become a preferred option in Twenty20 cricket, but he could come into consideration for the five-match ODI series against Australia next month should England opt to rest some of their Ashes winners.

Wright followed his heavy hitting by returning figures of two for five as Bangladesh were bowled out for 151 in 47 overs.
