The all-rounder had a fantastic game, hammering a quickfire 60 and then following this up with figures of 4-9, including a hat-trick, as he highlighted his ever-improving credentials.

And, as he admitted to Sky Sports in a none too subtle interview immediately after his innings ended, he and the Surrey seamer don’t really see eye to eye.

He said: “Me and Jade get on really well and I’m sure we’ll have a drink in the hotel tonight. Just a bit of battle out there in the middle and it was lovely to shake his hand at the end!

“Sometimes I don’t enjoy it (the on-field banter) too much and I just like to be quiet and not get involved and other times it gets me going and today it got me fired up nicely.”

And the fact that it was Dernbach who copped the punishment was of particular delight to the County man.

He added: “I quite enjoyed clearing my front leg and whacking him (Dernbach) to be honest and I don’t think he enjoyed it too much.

“He seemed to think I was a slogging something or other, which is probably pretty accurate.”

And as to what got him going while at the crease, he replied simply: “Him.”
