Batting depth delights victorious Wakely

The Steelbacks annihilated Surrey by 102 runs in the showpiece at Edgbaston based on an outstanding effort with the bat which saw Wakely, Cameron White and David Willey all record half-centuries.

And the captain was pleased that the best laid plans came to fruition, saying: “You get a bit of momentum and you get that belief there and you get that belief that you can carry on where the last guy left off.

“Teams like Notts and the best one-day teams, they keep on coming and that’s the position we’re getting to. We’ve got strikers all the way down the order and it’s something for us to build on.”

And Wakely said that attentions will quickly turn to the other two fronts that the side are competing on, starting with the trip to Colchester to face Essex on Tuesday.

He added: “We haven’t played the perfect game yet, we played pretty good cricket here today and we’ve learnt that we can get better and hopefully next year we’ll be even better.

“We’ve still got an outside chance in the YB40 and we’ve got a big game against Warwickshire but we’ll turn our attention to Championship cricket.

“We’ll really enjoy tonight because the guys have put in a lot of hard work and I’m very proud of where we’ve got to.”
