Clark backs ‘leader’ Wood for England captaincy

Calum Clark says he has ‘ultimate confidence’ in Saints team-mate Tom Wood’s ability to captain England.

Wood has been linked with the role ahead of the upcoming QBE Internationals, having led the Red Rose to a 2-0 Test series win in Argentina during the summer.

Chris Robshaw is another contender, having been the skipper during the Six Nations, while other players could still come into contention.

But Clark feels fellow Saints flanker Wood is perfectly equipped for the job of spearheading England’s autumn charge against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.

“I think he’d be really strong,” said Clark. “I’m not sure what calls have been made but you’d back him if he was picked to do that job, 100 per cent.

“He’s a leader, someone who turns up every week, plays well, gives 100 per cent and never has a bad game.

“You have ultimate confidence in someone like him that on big matchdays he’ll be there or thereabouts as one of the best players on the field.

“He’s very professional off it as well. He trains hard, pushes himself and being in the same position as him, we’re pushing each other to improve.

“He’s a good person to have in the squad and a good person to have in the gym and all that sort of stuff.”
