Northampton boxer Conway ready to bring big title back to town

The 24-year-old has yet to claim a title in his 16-fight professional career, with the closest he has come being when he drew with belt holder Ted Cheeseman in a British title bout last summer.

But Conway goes into Matchroom’s Friday Fight Night in Brentwood as the strong bookies favourite to break that duck.

And the fighter admits it is certainly ‘a big incentive’ for him.

“I think my last fight was meant to be for a title, but then things didn’t work out that way, so it is good that this one has been sanctioned,” Conway said.

“It is a big incentive, and it will be nice to have something to show for what we are doing.

“I had the British title fight and that has been my only title fight as a professional, which is weird.

“I haven’t had any fights for an area title, English or anything in the way of a title shot, so it will be nice to have something to show, definitely.

“The title brings good world rankings as well, and for a lot of world champions this belt has been their first stepping stone, so it is a really good one to have, especially at this weight.”

Friday’s Fight Night, which is being staged behind closed doors in the garden of Matchroom Boxing’s Brentwood HQ in Essex, is being broadcast live on Sky Sports.

And Conway wants all town fight fans to make sure they are watching.

“It is going to be great to get back in the ring, I am looking forward to it and being in front of the cameras,” said Conway, who hasn’t fought since beating Craig O’Brien in December, 2019.

“I want to get that title and bring it home, and I hope every single TV in Northampton is tuned into Sky Sports on the night."
