It’s the service no-one ever wants to use; but when a relationship fails, this is the expert you’ll want in your corner.

A Northamptonshire law firm has recruited a leading light in family law to head up their services in the county.

Borneo Martell Turner Coulston (BMTC) Solicitors has appointed Northamptonshire-based Beresford Kennedy, an accomplished barrister and family law expert with over 20 years of experience (including in London), as their new Head of Family.

He’s come to head up a team which is determined to make sure you achieve a fair, just settlement with as little stress as possible.

Beresford, a father-of-two, said: “Any kind of split or custody dispute is obviously incredibly difficult for all involved. I’m civil, yet tenacious, and I work incredibly hard for my clients to make sure the process is resolved fairly and quickly. It’s possible to have a good divorce, and the earlier people instruct a solicitor the more chance there is of finding an amicable, or at least civil, solution.”

Common family law questions answered

We asked Beresford to explain some of the questions new clients have around family law and divorce advice in Northamptonshire, including child custody, asset division and pensions.

We’re still married – is it ever too early to take legal advice?

No. I can offer confidential advice to individuals before they begin any formal proceedings. And in situations like this it is always advisable to take advice as early as possible.

These days, many couples entering marriage or a civil partnership agree a pre-nup in advance, just in case.

We have businesses and pensions together – how do we untangle it?

At Borneo Martell Turner Coulston we have access to all the experts we need, and have lots of experience. Whether you are a high net worth individual, a business owner or however long you have been together, the team will work hard on your behalf to achieve the best outcome we can for you.

Does a divorce always end up in court?

No, we try to avoid that where possible. In fact, the vast majority of cases I handle are resolved before that, saving time, money and stress for all. However, as a qualified barrister I can take any dispute all the way to get a fair solution for my client if required.

We were a blended family – how does that work?

In the modern world there are often children from earlier relationships, and children from the current marriage, to consider when a couple split. We have the compassion, empathy, and most importantly, experience to help you navigate the waters. I always aim for a constructive approach when there are children involved, and put their interests above all else.

My situation is complex, and I don’t know where to turn

We specialise in simplifying difficult cases and making it not only easy to understand for our clients, but to find the simplest, fairest and lucrative way through. Because I have so much experience in the field, I can spot pitfalls and problems long before they develop. By letting me negotiate on your behalf, I will take the stress and the strain away from you as much as I can.

I’m tenacious for clients, adversarial when required, but civil right from the start. It is entirely possible to have a good divorce, and that’s the best for all.
