Become a foster carer and you could give the gift of a loving home to a child by next Christmas.

If you’re making plans for this Christmas, and the New Year ahead, Northamptonshire Fostering ask you to consider how your skills can transfer to be a foster carer, the Northamptonshire Fostering’s team say.
As we write this article, there are over 100,000 children and young people in care across the UK, many of whom face spending their Christmas in care, away from families. In Northamptonshire alone, there are around 1200 children who could benefit from a loving and stable foster family.
Northamptonshire Fostering’s message is simple. What better gift to give a child or young person next Christmas than a chance of a loving and stable home through fostering. You too could help a child or young person to feel the warmth of a family environment and the comfort of belonging.

Maybe next year, you could make a difference to a child
Across the UK, there is a shortage of foster carers, and that gap continues to grow. It is predicted that by 2026 there will be a shortage of 25,000 carers in England alone.
Could fostering be in your future?
Do you have room for an extra person around the Christmas dinner table next year? Could you help to bring comfort and joy into the life of a young person?
All children deserve a secure and loving family Christmas and fostering can help to provide just that, not just at Christmas, but all year through.
Who can foster?
You might think fostering is out of reach, but the truth is, many people already have the skills needed to make a difference in a child’s life.
If you have skills in working with children or young people, be that through your job, by being a parent yourself, or perhaps you are compassionate, kind and supportive and simply want to make a difference to a vulnerable child or young person, then fostering could be for you.
The fostering process may seem daunting, but our friendly fostering team will be with you at every step of the way, going at your pace and answering your questions and supporting you along the way.
If you feel that you have the skills to foster a child or young person, you are based in the Northamptonshire area and you have a spare room that can be used exclusively to provide stability and a sense of home to a foster child, then we would like to hear from you.
As we start to look to Christmas, and the new year that follows, now is a good time to ask ourselves whether fostering could be something to explore in 2025.
It’s not about having a perfect background packed full of essential skills, sometimes it is as simple as having space in your life, both physically and emotionally, to welcome a child or young person in need.”

There are many different types of fostering
Fostering can be more flexible than you might think, and so it is worth exploring the types of fostering available as it can fit into your life in a variety of ways:
Emergency fostering: Providing a safe space for children for a short time in urgent situations.
Respite care: Offering short-term support to help provide support to other foster carers, over weekends or holidays.
Short-term care: Caring for children from a few days to a few months while longer-term plans are made for their future.
Long-term care: Becoming a stable, permanent foster carer of foster family for a child who cannot return to their birth family, providing stability and support often until the young person reaches adulthood.
Perhaps you are unsure about long-term commitments, or you aren’t able to consider full time care right now, perhaps considering starting with emergency or respite care could be the first step toward changing a child’s life.

Helping young people to thrive by keeping care local
We know that when children and young people have access to supportive and loving foster carers their long-term future can be positively enhanced. Equally, keeping children within their local communities wherever possible is important, but more carers are needed to help support children and young people in the region.
The need for local foster carers is so important. Children can remain in the place they know, stay in contact with their friends, and maintain communication with their families.
Benefits of fostering with your local authority
By fostering with your local authority, you’ll not only benefit from comprehensive support and resources, but you’ll also be joining a community dedicated to improving outcomes for local children.
There will be financial support, ongoing training and development, 24/7 support, and depending on the age of the young person, access to 30-hours funded childcare to support your family life alongside additional allowances.
