A powerful new Android tablet with a massive screen, premium build and all-day battery life has quietly become one of the best-value buys of the year
The Redmi Pad 2 Pro launched recently at £299, and it's aiming to compete with some seriously strong brands, but bringing some interesting features into the 12.1" tablet ring.
As a large-screen tablet, it wades into battle with a very impressive suite of hardware, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, and it's available with 8GB of RAM with up to 256GB of storage.
This instantly puts it on a par or even ahead of its obvious Chinese rivals, and it even marches confidently over the similarly sized, similarly priced Lenovo Idea Tab Plus.
It's also a nice thing to hold in your hand, with a bright matte glass screen available as an option, a metal back as standard, and a sensible weight and balance. It's quite thick by modern standards, at 7.5mm, but not obtrusively so.

There's a headphone jack, a USB-C port, no fingerprint scanner, but an 8 megapixel camera and some of the best speakers fitted to any mid-range tablet.
The LCD display offers a 2560 x 1600p resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 600 nits.
This brightness is compromised a little by tight viewing angles, but it's a pleasant screen nonetheless.
If you like, and if your budget will stretch, you can add accessories such as a smart pen and a keyboard cover. These obviously extend the functionality, and the setup suits the Redmi Pad 2 Pro's size and power well. It turns it into a genuinely competent productivity suite.
Battery life is strong, too. With a hefty 12,000mAh battery it's ready to put in some serious shifts, and it can recharge at up to 33 watts.

The battery is the main reason the Redmi Pad 2 Pro feels heavy. It's a big unit compared to some, but thankfully, it doesn't come with a big price tag.
And that's its best selling point. Depending on the version you choose, you can buy one for less than £250. There's one on Amazon, with the 256GB version with 8GB of RAM, at just £229. And that's a serious bargain.
There really aren't many tablets at this size, with this power, and with this much capability that are available for that price.
Ignore the tablets littering the likes of Amazon and eBay from brands you've never heard of, promising too-good-to-be-true specs. This is the real deal. And if you can catch Amazon's 23% discount, it's one of the best-value options out there.
