Gas and electricity provider Yorkshire Energy has stopped trading, meaning around 74,000 households will have their supplier switched over.
Scottish Power will take on Yorkshire Energy’s customers, after energy regulator Ofgem appointed them on 5 December.
Will existing customers have their supply interrupted?
Households which were supplied by Yorkshire Energy will not lose their supply, and any existing credit on their accounts will be protected.
Scottish Power will be reaching out to former Yorkshire Energy customers in the coming days to provide some initial information, then again not long afterwards, to confirm that an account has been set up.
Ofgem has stressed that former Yorkshire Energy customers definitely will not experience a break in their supply, as the regulator has stepped in to ensure a smooth transition.
What should existing customers do?
To avoid potential confusion or issues later, it is advised that customers take a meter reading to use as a reference, just in case there are pay disputes or issues later on.
For former customers of Yorkshire Energy with credit on their account, this will carry over. If you were in debt, this will likely still need to be repaid, either to Yorkshire Energy, its administrators, or potentially Scottish Power, though this will be confirmed.
Ofgem’s advice for now is that former customers don’t need to do anything, other than wait for Scottish Power to contact them, and take a meter reading.
If you were in the process of switching to Yorkshire Energy, you will instead switch to Scottish Power.
Chief executive of Yorkshire Energy, Annie Faulder, said, "After two and a half years in operation, we sadly have begun proceedings to cease trading. We have operated since day one with the simple values of transparency and honesty, paying our renewable obligations on time and having customer service that we are proud of.
"Ofgem, the energy regulator, is appointing a new supplier for our customers, which will be announced on Saturday 5 December. We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to our customers and colleagues for their loyal support over the years."
