Based on the songs of Swedish pop group, ABBA, the original production brought in more than $600 million globally at the box office.

Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Julie Walters and Colin Firth will all reprise their roles from the first film.

Newcomers to the cast include Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver) and Cher.

Returning to the Greek island of Kalokairi where Mamma Mia! was set, the plot of the new film flashes back and forward in time to show how relationships between the characters were forged, and to show how the present mirrors the past for Sophie (Seyfried) and those around her.

Ol Parker (writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) writes and directs the sequel from a story by Catherine Johnson, Richard Curtis and Parker.
