Cocktails at some of the UK’s biggest restaurant chains have been found to contain less than one shot of alcohol per drink, a new Channel 4 documentary has claimed.
All Bar One, Slug and Lettuce and Las Iguanas were all revealed by Tricks of the Restaurant Trade to sell cocktails with less than the industry standard amount of alcohol.
Lab tests on six cocktails revealed that four piña coladas at Slug and Lettuce had less than one unit of alcohol despite the industry alcohol average being two shots per cocktail or 2 units dependent on brand.
Slug and Lettuce make the traditional Puerto Rican drink with Malibu coconut rum, which contains just 21 per cent ABV.
The traditional recipe for a piña colada contains 50 ml of rum.
Piña coladas at All Bar One and Las Iguanas were also found to contain less than the average of two shots per cocktail.
A spokesperson for Slug and Lettuce said: “All our cocktails are made to national guidelines.”
A spokesperson for Las Iguanas also commented: “1.4 shots is correct for a pina colada.”
Tricks of the Restaurant Trade presenter Sophie Morgan told The Mirror: “All six contained less alcohol than an average pint of lager and medium glass of wine.”
The revelations come as part of an inquiry by Tricks of the Restaurant Trade series 4 episode 2 is available to watch on All 4.
