Weldon pub fundraiser gives Cancer Research £3,000 boost

For years The George in Stamford Road has held fundraisers around Halloween for different charities.

This year they decided to raise money for Cancer Research after local Jean Flynn, 73, was diagnosed with the disease for the third time.

Everybody but Mrs Flynn was told, leaving her shocked and surprised when she arrived.

She said: “I was told I was getting a taxi but opened the door and there was a Rolls Royce, which chauffered me the long way around the village.

“I didn’t know it was coming and it was a great surprise.

“The night at the pub was a fantastic night and it was heaving.

“My two sisters have fought cancer as well so it really is close to my heart.”

On the night there was an auction, raffle, live band and a disco.

The event was held on October 29 but the total has just been counted at £2,815, which the pub’s owner topped up to £3,000.

Manager Louise Dempster said: “It was a really good night and I was quite surprised by how many people attended.

“For a village of this size it was big and people made an effort dressing up.

“I think she (Jean) was a bit overwhelmed by it all.

“We’ve raised good amounts in the past years but this is the most we have raised.”

Cancer Research local fundraising manager Lizzie Melvin said: “We do not get any money from the Government so it is literally only from the public and every bit counts.

“The latest research is immunotherapy therapy and we are trying to find the cancerous cells which disguise themselves and kill them.

“A desk centrifuge for example costs £2,800 so the fundraising efforts of the pub will go a long way.”
