Met Office forecasters are predicting there could be a thundery finish to Northamptonshire's hottest day of July.

Temperatures are hitting a sticky 33°C across the county on Friday — the last day of the month — but a weather alert across the eastern part of the county for heavy rain and thunder is in force from 4pm.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: "You probably already know Friday set to be a hot one, but increasing chance of seeing some thunderstorms across eastern England late in the day.

"That's where the heat and humidty could trigger some thunderstorms.

"These storms will be pretty well scattered but parts of the East Midlands and East Anglia are areas where we we could see downpours developing with the odd flash of lightning.

"Not everywhere will catch one but where they do occur, because of the energy in the atmosphere they could be pretty nasty dropping a lot of rain in a short space of time."

Saturday and Sunday's outlook is mostly dry with sunny spells and temperatures around 10 °C lower than on Friday but rain could return from Monday.
