The re-opening of Higham Ferrers' Station has been delayed until next year.

Station Road was closed as part of the ongoing improvement works at Chowns Mill and was due to partially re-open to road users in November.

However, several factors have led to the re-opening being postponed by several months.

Informations sent out to stakeholders by Carnell says: "I am writing to inform you that the re-opening of Station Road (A5028) Higham Ferrers will be postponed until February 2021.

"We were planning to partially re-open Station Road to road users in November 2020.

"The delay in re-opening the road is partially due to the shortage and supply of materials during Covid-19 and partially due to the impact of other utility works beyond our control.

"Safety is our first imperative and we have decided that it will be safer to open the road completely in February rather than open part of it in November.

"We would like to apologise for the delay in the re-opening of Station Road and thank you for your ongoing patience while we carry out this important work.

"Please be assured that we’ll be working quickly to open Station Road as soon as possible.

"Over the next four weeks, we’ll be working longer days near Station Road (A5028).

"Overall, we remain on track to complete the A45 Chowns Mill improvement scheme in late 2021, early 2022."

The £24 million Chowns Mill improvement scheme started in February and is set to take 22 months so the works are due to be completed by winter 2021/22.

The improvements to the roundabout will see the junction redesigned in a half hamburger layout including a new link road connecting the A6 South and A5028 with the existing roundabout.

All approaching roads will also be widened to provide extra lanes and to accommodate more vehicles.

Once the works are complete, Highways England says the whole community will also benefit from safer dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes through the junction.
