Fire crews from across Northamptonshire rushed to Corby railway station yesterday (Thursday, December 17) teatime after reports a passenger train was on fire.

The force control room received a call at 4.15pm that a train was ablaze close to Corby railway station. Crews from Corby, Kettering, Mereway in Northampton along with special appliances went to the scene and searched the area.

They found nothing, despite an extensive search or the area, the train wasn't located and British Transport Police confirmed that the call was malicious.

A Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Like all emergency services, we respond to calls for help in good faith and it is disappointing when people decide to abuse the system.

“There is a very real danger that while our crews are attending a false report such as this they are unable to attend a genuine call for help, potentially putting the lives of others at risk.

“We take incidents such as this extremely seriously and are liaising with British Transport Police in relation to this call.”
