Drivers have been branded 'reckless' for continuing to flout the speed limit with more than 3,000 offences recorded through the Chowns Mill roadworks.

Police started their enforcement activity back on April 29 and three months later, 3,023 offences have been detected through the works area.

The offences include one motorist caught doing 101mph through the roadworks, which have a 40mph limit.

A spokesman for Northants Police said: "The restrictions are in place to protect both the workers on the site and also the travelling public.

"There are large sections of unfinished or missing central barrier along with a narrow lane system.

"As it’s an active worksite, it is important that motorists comply with the lower limits."

The £24 million Chowns Mill improvement scheme started in February and is set to take 22 months.

The improvements to the roundabout will see the junction redesigned in a half hamburger layout including a new link road connecting the A6 South and A5028 with the existing roundabout.

All approaching roads will also be widened to provide extra lanes and to accommodate more vehicles.

The works are due to be completed by winter 2021/22.
