When a lorry 'jackknifes', it means when the vehicle and its trailer forms a V-shape after the trailer swings out in an uncontrolled skidding movement.

Highways England reports that there is currently around four miles of congestion approaching the smash on the major motorway after it was blocked off northbound and there are delays of up to one hour.

The M1 northbound has since been reopened but traffic is not expected to return to normal conditions until 9.30pm at the latest.

Northamptonshire Police have been contacted for comment.
