The incident happened in Corby during school-run time yesterday afternoon after the driver of the silver 4X4 failed to stop when asked to do so by police.

It sped through the town’s industrial areas, followed by officers, who then abandoned their chase after it became too dangerous.

Just moments later, at about 3pm, the driver stopped his car, ran off and let it roll down the steep hill.

Miraculously, the car hit the roadside, swerved back into the road, then crashed off into a metal road sign and up a grass bank next to the entrance to Rockingham Castle, amazingly avoiding oncoming cars.

Motorists saw the drama unfolding as they climbed the 16 per cent gradient hill on the other side of the road.

A police spokesman said: “It was very, very lucky that nobody was seriously injured.

“The motorist made off as soon as he got out of the car and we’ve unfortunately been unable to locate him.”

The police helicopter also helped in the search for the driver.

Officers are now appealing for anyone who saw the incident or knows the whereabouts of the driver to contact them on 111 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

There have been many road traffic collisions on the road over the years. In 2009 a crane driver lost control and the huge vehicle it sped down the hill, into a house.
