Wellingborough's civic leaders have paid their respects on behalf of the council to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

To replace the usual Holocaust Memorial Day service and events.that could not take place due to the ongoing coronavirus situation, Wellingborough mayor Cllr Jon Paul Carr and Wellingborough Council leader Cllr Martin Griffiths paid their respects at a private event on behalf of the council.

It took place in line with social distancing guidelines and current lockdown restrictions.

Cllr Jon Paul Carr said: “Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and gives us all an opportunity to remember those who were persecuted and perished at the hands of the Nazis and also in more recent genocides.

"Marking Holocaust Memorial Day ensures that the horrendous crimes of racism and victimisation committed are never forgotten.

“Holocaust Memorial Day enables us to remember – for a purpose.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust will be hosting a virtual ceremony today (Wednesday) at 7pm with the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 of ‘Be the light in the darkness’.
