Wellingborough charity celebrates community asset transfer

A charity which supports people facing issues including homelessness will officially have two community buildings leased to them from Wellingborough Council as a community asset transfer.

Councillors resolved to transfer a long lease of Queens Hall and part of 10 High Street Place to the ownership of Wellingborough charity Daylight at its council meeting, which took place virtually last week (June 16) under the community asset transfer policy.

Community asset transfer is the process of transferring ownership of properties or land to a community organisation, such as a development trust, to achieve local social, economic and/or

environmental gain.

Daylight, an independent charity which offers support to people across North Northamptonshire facing a range of issues and homelessness, will officially take ownership of the buildings enabling them to make the appropriate alterations to meet the needs of the charity and its service users.

Council leader Cllr Martin Griffiths said: “Daylight provides vital services to the residents of Wellingborough and our surrounding towns who are experiencing a difficult time.

“When the community asset transfer came before council last week, I was encouraged and pleased that it received cross party support.

“We are delighted to support the transfer of both the Queens Hall and part of 10 High Street Place to this incredibly important charity, who we already have a long-established relationship

with and we look forward to containing to work with them.”

The charity’s chairman, Rachel Mallows MBE, said: “This is very exciting news for Daylight.

"We have transformed our services during the pandemic to meet the needs of our housed homeless and now families in poverty, strengthening our food parcel and hot ready meal delivery service delivering thousands of meals over the past few months.

"This decision by the councillors is a significant step in a closer working relationship with them to help so many vulnerable adults.”
