New panel celebrates past and present of Higham Ferrers park

A new panel celebrating the past and present of a Higham Ferrers park has been installed.

On the rather wet morning of August 19, district councillor Richard Gell was joined by Higham Ferrers mayor Cllr Tina Reavey and town council leader Cllr Pam Whiting to celebrate the interpretation panel being installed on the recreational land off Nightingale Way, Station Road.

The council took ownership of this land in 1975 when it was transferred to them from the Corporation of Higham Ferrers following local government re-organisation.

The land originally formed part of a larger land holding that had been used for recreational purposes back in the mid-1800s.

The panel shares the history of this recreational land, ‘Stanwick Road Recreation Ground’, past to present day.

The panel stands by the new play equipment installed last year and has been funded in part by East Northamptonshire Council's member empowerment fund.

Undeterred by the rain and to support district councillor Gell, the chairman of the district council, Cllr Helen Howell, and district council leader Cllr Steven North, were pleased to attend and glean for themselves a little piece of Higham’s rich and fascinating history.

The panel’s map shows other council land nearby that you can walk to, including the dogs off lead area and Higham Ferrers Town Green.

Both of these are only a short walking distance away and can be accessed using the pedestrian bridge over the A6.
