Campaigners in the East Northants village of Warmington are hoping plans for the construction of a sand and gravel quarry will be refused.

The proposed site of the quarry is on a popular beauty spot near the A605.

Campaigners claim increased vehicle movements will have a severe impact on traffic in both directions, potentially causing serious delays between Peterborough and Northampton.

The controversial plans for the site follow months of questions raised about how the land came to be a part of Northamptonshire County Council’s Mineral and Waste Local Plan.

Local campaign group ‘No To Warmington Quarry’ say the application for the proposed site is based on a false premise, being referred to as ‘Elton Quarry Extension’.

But as Amy Lindley from ‘No To Warmington Quarry’ said: “There’s never been a quarry at Elton, so to claim in the application that this is an extension gives the impression that there’s a similar site nearby, and that simply isn’t true.

“These points were promoted to NCC by the quarry agent/developer, stating the site was an ‘extension’ to an ‘existing’ quarry, but made without appropriate community consultation.”

Warmington Parish Council and MP for Corby and East Northants Tom Pursglove have been supporting the ‘No To Warmington Quarry’ group.

The group says its concerns are shared by The Environment Agency, The Wildlife Trust, The Campaign To Protect Rural England and more than 100 objections from the general public.

Recently a new greenway route for walkers and cyclists was completed on the Nene Way, a designated area of natural beauty, and which runs alongside the land where the proposed quarry will be dug.

The decision on whether to approve or refuse the quarry proposal will be made by Northamptonshire County Council on September 30.
