Corby Council is looking for nominations for its 2021 Spirit of Corby Awards to ensure they can give the town's unsung heroes the recognition they deserve.

Covid meant the council was forced to cancel the Spirit of Corby Awards for 2020 and will not be able to hold its usual awards evening before April 2021 when the authority will merge to form a unitary council with the north of the county.

While they can't hold their normal awards ceremony where winners are revealed, the authority still wants to celebrate the people who go above and beyond for the good of the town so they are planning to present the 2020 winners with their awards at their own door.

Do you know someone who has the spirit of Corby?Do you know someone who has the spirit of Corby?
Do you know someone who has the spirit of Corby?

There are countless people who have shown true community spirit during a time when it’s been most needed and the council wants to thank them.

People have until January 29, 2021, to nominate someone they know for one of the following categories:

- The Young Spirit of Corby Award: Nominate a young Corby resident (under 25) who has made a contribution to their local community, is an example to their friends, may have excelled in music, education, sport or has perhaps overcome adversity to show the real Spirit of Corby

- Club Spirit Award: Nominate an individual who has contributed towards a local club or society, such as sporting, social or voluntary groups, or nominate for the whole club or group for what they bring to the community. Maybe someone has gone above and beyond to keep a group together during lockdown or started a new one to keep people together

- Community Spirit Award: An individual or group who has worked towards making their area a safer or stronger community, whether it’s through contributing to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, or simply being an active member of the community who gives time to make a difference in the area

- Creative Spirit Award: Nominate an individual or group who has shown talent or given up time to help develop others in the arts in Corby – music, theatre, art, dance, literature etc. Or who has shown general creativity through arts & crafts such as knitting, painting and handy crafts. With the arts suffering this year we know that there are so many of you out there that have got creative and inspired others, shared some joy or raised money

- Educational Spirit Award: For an individual or group who has enriched their lives through a commitment to learning, maybe an adult who has returned to education and achieved excellence in their chosen field, or someone young or older who inspires others with their enthusiasm and love for learning. Maybe a teacher has gone above and beyond to keep their students engaged during lockdown

- Environmental Spirit Award: For an individual or group who has worked to protect or improve the natural or built environment, or promoted environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviour e.g recycling, energy saving

- Special 2020 Award: As 2020 has been a very unique year we have introduced this one-off award for those that have really shown the Spirit of Corby during what has been an incredibly difficult year for many. This is for someone who has made a real contribution to their community throughout the pandemic, supporting others, being a role model to others, volunteering, raising money etc

Corby Council leader Cllr Tom Beattie said: "It is of course disappointing that we can’t hold our last ever Spirit of Corby Awards as we normally do, however we are still determined to acknowledge the amazing people in our community who contribute so much to life in Corby.

"We know that so many individuals and groups have done amazing things this year, ensuring that people have what they need during lockdown, keeping people active and making sure they aren’t lonely, ensuring groups and education is still progressing and giving their time so selflessly to help others.
