Objections have been raised to proposed alterations for a Rushden house described as an 'important historical landmark.'
An application has been made for external changes to 55, Bedford Road in Rushden.
Permission is being sought for alterations including replacement of part of the existing lawn area with hardstanding, ivory render applied to all elevations including the existing annex building, and new entrance steps and raised patio area to the front and sides of the dwelling.
However, a number of objections have been lodged against the application.
One objection says: "This house was built in 1926 by Walter Charles Tarry who owned the Tecnic Shoe Company also based on the site and built in 1923.
"The house is such a beautiful example of a design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh it would be a shame to change the look.
"I object to the plans as the render of the whole house will hide the original features of the historic design this is part of history and should not be changed in this way.
"The noise, chaos and all such building matters will be upsetting for the people living close by especially if/when they render the garage which is next to a bungalow on a private road."
Another objector says: "This building is important to Rushden, keep our lovely historic buildings we have so few left, why destroy history to replace it with bad buildings with no design or thought, our past is more important than money."
One objector has made a direct appeal to the applicant, saying: "Please could I appeal to the current owner not to render over the beautiful arts and craft style facade of this important historical landmark.
"The history of the building would be removed if the proposed render is applied, once it's gone it's gone forever."
One further objection says: "It's good to see someone updating the property but the intended rendering of the existing brickwork/woodwork is not in keeping with the heritage of this beautiful building.
"I grew up on Bedford Road and remember this house as an example of a classical design amongst "boring" surrounding homes.
"Applying cladding to the exterior would ruin the character of the building and rob Rushden of a classically designed exterior.
"So, in summary I object to the planning permission as-is and suggest that the cladding part of the application be denied."
