Police stage armed robbery for Corby cadets

Police officers from Corby were joined by a number of special constables for the re-enactment of an armed robbery at the home of the Corby Air Cadets in St Mark’s Road.

With the youngsters stood behind the police cordon, they witnessed a gang of robbers armed with weapons burst in, threaten staff and demand cash from the safe.

As the robbers ran off, officers arrived on the scene, made a number of arrests and searched the suspects before they were taken in for questioning.

The exercise was designed to show them what happens when a crime is committed and how the police deal with it.

PC Mark Walker, who organised the event, said: “They invited us to do a talk, but as there’s a big group of them we decided we would do something a bit more dramatic and we would act out an armed robbery scenario.

“It’s just a bit different.”

Once the demonstration was over, the cadets were split into groups to learn and talk about each stage of the police investigation, including the impact on the victims, what the scenes of crime officers do and what happens in the control room.

PC Walker said he hoped the exercise would not only give an insight into the work of the police, but also lead to discussion on numerous issues, including personal safety, morals, ethics, responsibility as a citizen and diversity.

Inspector for the Corby area Julie Mead said: “PC Walker just wanted to make it come to life.”

Similar demonstrations have been given to the JAM team, which offers numerous services to young people in Northamptonshire, and it is hoped that the county’s emergency services cadets will also be able to take part in the future.

About 70 youngsters from Corby Air Cadets, which has 120 young people in total aged from 12-and-three-months up to 21, took part in Monday’s exercise.
