While some asked what such a strong smell could be, others were certain there could be just one offender - muck spreading.

One poster said: "How long have you guys lived here? It happens every year, will only last a couple of days, muck spreading. Keeps the ground fertilised for all our benefits."

Another said: "Farmers muck spreading! It happens every year but depending on which way the wind is blowing will depends on who gets the worst smell."

Someone else suspected a different culprit and said: "Landfill, been like it for years."

Another person agreed and said: "It's awful, smells like rotting rubbish not the smell (you) normally get from muck spreading."

Others joked about what they thought had caused the smell, with one person saying: "I was getting the blame for it in my house...knew it wasn't me."

One dog owner said she'd thought the smell was coming from her pet. They said: "I was convinced it was the dog as he was rolling on the grass earlier, so I gave him a shower!"

The origins of the persistent smell remain a mystery. If you know for sure what is causing the pong, get in touch with us a [email protected].

Kettering Borough Council have been contacted for comment.
