Wellingborough residents being urged to 'wash and squash' their waste

The advice comes as the amount of waste created by each household is expected to increase with people being at home more

Residents across Wellingborough are being urged to support the borough council's aim to reduce landfill waste and continue to recycle while people are spending more time at home.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, many people are spending a lot more time at home which may mean more waste.

To help to continue to improve recycling rates in the borough, residents are being asked to wash and squash all recyclable waste.

A full list of what can and can’t be recycled can be found on the Wellingborough Council website.

Council leader Cllr Martin Griffiths said: “I would like to thank all residents who are following Government guidance and spending more time at home as much as possible to support the fight against Coronavirus.

"In particular those who have applauded our teams, or left them kind pictures and notes.

“With us all spending more time at home, we will be likely producing more waste.

"We are encouraging all residents to wash and squash their waste and recycle this where possible.

“If anyone has any extra recycling than won’t fit in their bins please put this in clear bags and our crews will take this away.

“You can continue to help our teams collect bins as quickly as possible by leaving plenty of room for trucks to pass when you park on the kerbside so that we can access your road and take away your recycling.”

Here are five extra top tips for recycling your waste:

- Wash your items after you’ve used them before you put them in your recycling bin

- Squash your recycling to allow more items to fit in the bin

- Try and reduce food waste by using leftovers and trying new recipes

- Buy larger items of food where possible to reduce the amount of packaging your buying

- Keep unused items to pass on in future giving them a new lease of life and avoiding landfill
