Wellingborough's official Remembrance Sunday service for the town residents to pay their respects to people killed in conflict has been cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision follows discussions between Wellingborough Council and the Wellingborough and District branch of the Royal British Legion.

Chairman of the Wellingborough and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Henry Summerfield, said: “It is extremely disappointing that we find ourselves in this position, however, we must think of the safety of the public during this time and adhere to Government guidance.

“It is of course vitally important that we remember those who have lost their lives serving their country and recognise all those who continue to serve so diligently.

“This year however, for the safety and wellbeing of residents, we have come to the difficult decision that the Remembrance Sunday parade and service cannot take place due to the ongoing coronavirus situation.

“Throughout this epidemic the Royal British Legion has, and will continue to, raise money for the poppy appeal."

Those wishing to purchase wreaths can still do so from the Royal British Legion office based at the Tithe Barn in Wellingborough.

A council spokesperson said: “We recognise the importance of this event to many in the town, but urge residents not to gather in large groups for their own safety. Instead, we ask that in these unprecedented circumstances, individual acts of remembrance take place.”

Mayor of Wellingborough Cllr Jon-Paul Carr and a small civic party will pay their respects at a separate private wreath laying.

Residents wishing to share their individual acts of remembrance are being encouraged to share their images and videos on the Wellingborough Council's Twitter feed @BCWboro or Facebook page.
