Nearly 2,000 people from Wellingborough and the surrounding area flocked to Wellingborough Fire Station for an open day which raised more than £3,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Held on October 1, the open day was a chance for members of the public to meet their local firefighters and understand what they do to keep the town safe.

Nearly 2,000 people gathered to learn about how Wellingborough Fire Station operates and why it’s such a valued part of the community.

The event raised a grand total of £3,313, with Barclays matching the amount raised on the day. Proceeds will go to The Fire Fighters Charity, an organisation that assists both serving and retired firefighters by providing physical and mental support to those who need it.

Demonstrations of real-world scenarios highlighted the immense pressure of the job, including a drill showing how crews would rescue people from cars that have been involved in a collision.

There was, however, sufficient time for more uplifting activities as children and aspiring firefighters had the opportunity to look around fire engines, engage in fitness tests, and use the water hoses. Live music, stalls, inflatables and face painting were also on offer, making the open day equal parts informative and entertaining.

The event was also a celebration of the late Queen Elizabeth II, with the initial date being rescheduled after her passing on September 8. Red, white and blue could be seen all over, with refreshments and marmalade sandwiches all contributing to the ‘party atmosphere’ on the day.

Ronnie Sherratt, a crew manager at Wellingborough Fire Station, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the turnout and support we had from the public, and as a result it’s the most money we’ve ever raised. We’d also like to thank Barclays for match funding what was raised so we were able to reach that amount.

“We would like to thank everyone who came along, and we’re delighted that everyone seemed to have such a good time.”
