Imagine what it would be like to be unable to read in adult life - how much do you rely on being able to read timetables, instructions, prescriptions, menus and recipes?

Charity Read Easy Wellingborough, part of the UK-wide network that helps adult learners to learn to read, is looking for people who would like to improve their reading skills.

The free service enables a 'coach' - a reading teacher, to be paired with a 'reader'- an adult who struggles with reading, for weekly sessions using teaching materials provided by the charity when they meet up at a time they choose.

Yvette Clembintson, Read Easy Wellingborough team leader and coach, said: "It is amazing to see the progress readers make in such a short space of time and watch their confidence build as a whole new world is opened up to them. It is making a huge difference to their lives and we are proud to be a part of that.

"We currently have 13 pairs of readers with coaches. Whilst a lot of the coaching has stopped due to Covid, our pairs are now starting to work together remotely using Zoom, WhatsApp or Skype. People can use a laptop, computer, tablet or phone and they can do it rom the comfort of their own homes.

"There are many reasons why some people may have found it difficult to learn to read at school.

"It it very hard for them to admit to anybody that they can't read. It takes amazing courage to come forward. However, the really good news is that it’s never too late to learn.

"Learning to read can be life changing and life saving - if you can't read the allergy list on a packet of food how do you know if it's safe to eat?"

Read Easy Wellingborough formed in March 2018 and has paired off 13 readers and coaches for two half-hour sessions a week on a one-to-one basis.

The reading scheme uses books written especially for adult learners so that the readers can relate to more mature topics.

Sandra Lewis from Read easy Wellingborough said: "Read Easy Wellingborough are ready for new adults who are looking to learn to read in the Wellingborough and Rushden areas, so if you or someone you know, is interested please contact us. We are able to help with any obstacles which may be there so everyone who wants to learn, can."

Read Easy Wellingborough is also looking to recruit coaches. No prior teaching experience is needed and training is given.

Yvette added: "If people would just come forward we can help. It's so hard to take that first step but it is life changing and it makes such a difference to people's lives."
