A warning has been issued to drivers after reports of tailgating and speeding through the A45 Chowns Mill roadworks.

Letters have been sent out to stakeholders and publicised by several town councils following reports of dangerous driving through the on-going improvement works.

The letter from Paul Valentine, public liaison officer for Highways England which is carrying out the works, says: "We have recently received several reports of boy racers tailgating each other and speeding through the A45/A6 junction, in breach of the temporary speed limits and putting road workers and other motorists at risk.

"We are working closely with our colleagues in the Northamptonshire Police road safety team to capture more information and to monitor these reports.

"I would be grateful if you would bring this issue to the attention of your staff/drivers, asking them to report any boy racer incidents but also to advise them that as part of our joint response plan, Northamptonshire Police may deploy a speed enforcement camera van to the area at unannounced times for the foreseeable future."

The £24 million improvement scheme started last month and is set to take 22 months to complete.

A 40mph speed restriction is in place both day and night.

A spokesman for Northants Police said: "It is something that we will be monitoring as the roadworks continue."

The spokesman said incidents can be reported to them online, and added: "Anyone with dashcam footage showing anyone flouting the law, whether it is going through at excessive speed or doing something that's careless or dangerous, they can upload it to our website.

"We review that and take action against people who are breaking the law."

The Chowns Mill improvement works are due to be completed by winter 2021/22.
