Elderly people living at Willow Brook House Care Home in South Road have been informed that they will have to find new homes.

The home operator Larchwood Care Homes Limited is having to close the doors of Willow Brook House after the building's owner sold it from under them. The new owners have asked for vacant possession which means residents have to find new homes.

The home, which has 35 residents including some with dementia, stands on the site of the Nag's Head pub in the Old Village. It is home to residents including 100-year old master builder John 'Jack' Young.

A spokesperson for Willow Brook House said that no date had been set for the closure, adding: “We regret that the home is closing. We do not own the building, which has been sold and the new owner has asked for vacant possession.

"We understand how difficult this will be for everyone involved. We will work with the local authority to make the transition to new homes as smooth as possible for our residents. By engaging with other local care providers and the job centre we hope that we can help our staff to find new positions and we will offer them support at this difficult time.

"The home will not close until a placement that meets their assessed needs has been found for every resident."

The existing owners of the site are London-based Larch Life No 1, who bought the site for a staggering £16m in 2004. It is believed the site is currently in the process of being sold to Northampton-based St Matthew's Healthcare which runs care homes and mental health facilities.

Jasbinder Singh Bhullar, Director of Operations & Business Development for new owner St Matthews Healthcare confirmed to reporters that the building will be used as a care home for people presenting with challenging behaviour and mental health needs.
