They've done it! Kettering nurse gets number one single with Captain Tom Moore

A Kettering nurse has hit the number one spot on the Official UK Singles Chart this afternoon (Friday, April 24) with Captain Tom Moore.

Scott Mills announced on the BBC Radio 1 that The Weeknd had come in at No.2 with his single 'Blinding Lights', meaning Captain Tom has done it and become the oldest living person to be credited on a No.1 single.

Live on Radio 1. Captain Tom Moore said: "It's amazing that this could happen to me."

He also said it was very kind of The Weeknd to tweet out in support of his charity single.

Estelle Ambler is a community children's nurse in the care, assessment and treatment of children at home team (CATCH) based at Kettering's St Mary's Hospital covering Kettering, Wellingborough, Rothwell, and Rushden.

She lives in the north of the county and sings on Captain Tom Moore's single as part of the NHS Voices of Care Choir.

The Captain has covered 'You'll Never Walk Alone' with Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care Choir and released it as a charity single last week (Friday, April 17) to support and raise money for the NHS.

Veteran Tom hit headlines when he raised an astonishing £28m for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden for his 100th birthday.

Estelle has performed in a choir before and said: "I became aware of a request for NHS workers to form the Voices of Care Choir for a charity song involving Michael Ball and felt it was an opportunity to take part and give something back to all our NHS colleagues who are working so hard during the current pandemic.

"It was really great singing with a diverse group of NHS workers.

"We didn’t know each other at all, there were representations of various NHS professionals.

"I felt it was a great demonstration of how well NHS professionals work together. I really enjoyed meeting and talking to the other nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and others from other NHS trusts online when we filmed the video."

She said the experience was quite emotional: "I did have a tear or two along with an overwhelming sense of pride for being part of it!"

Estelle said her NHS colleagues are dedicated professionals who are giving their all and making many significant sacrifices to be there for patients and team mates.

She said: "My CATCH team colleagues literally are my second family."

Captain Tom's single is faced stiff competition from The Weeknd for the top spot, but the singer tweeted out in support of the veteran and said: "everyone in the UK please support Captain Tom Moore / Mr Michael Ball single so this incredible 99 yr old war veteran, walking for the British National Health Service & now raised $35 Million can have a No 1 for his 100th birthday in the UK! We're routing for you. XO!"

Estelle said: "It would be truly amazing if the song hit the number one spot for Captain Tom Moore's 100th birthday, imagine having a number one song for your 100th birthday?!

"Captain Tom has inspired the nation to play a part in helping the efforts to fight the current pandemic. The amount of money he has raised for the NHS is phenomenal.

"The NHS is there for all and for him to be leading the fundraising efforts for us all is the most wonderful example of human kindness."

Estelle added: "I would like to tell my NHS colleagues that they really are the best, keep safe and well all of you, working out there on the frontlines and those working behind the scenes."
