Stanwick Lakes fire: Insurance payout is 'imminent' and they're ready to start clearing the site

Stanwick Lakes say that they are expecting to get the go ahead to start the rebuilding process at their burned-down play area soon.

A fire started by arsonists destroyed one of the main play structures at the popular family attraction just off the A45 on April 10.

The transformed site of the former gravel pits, run by the Rockingham Forest Trust, was expecting a bumper post-lockdown summer for families keen to get out in the sunshine.

But the local community was left devastated after the blaze and raised thousands for the Trust. Now the trust says that extra security measures will be put in place before the start of rebuilding and that there will be 'temporary play experiences' over the summer before a new structure is built.

This afternoon (Friday, April 23) they have released a statement which reads: "Following forensic investigations we are just waiting for the go-ahead from our insurers (expected imminently) to dismantle, clear and clean up the area and commission a replacement play structure.

"Lead times on timber mean it is unlikely to be in place before the autumn, but the good news is that we are looking to provide some temporary play experiences and equipment in the giant sand pit for children to enjoy over the summer.

"In the meantime, enhanced security cameras, lighting and patrols are already being put in place.

"We thank you again for all the encouragement, donations and offers of help. They keep our spirits up and will enable us to recover and come back stronger."
