Corby has witnessed a spike in coronavirus cases, with the highest number of infections confirmed in a single day since April.

Official figures from the government show there were 12 new cases of Covid-19 in Corby on Tuesday, August 25.

This is the highest figure since April 30, when 13 infections were confirmed in the borough. There has not been more than 10 cases confirmed in a single day in Corby since May 18.

Tuesday's spike is also three times greater than this month's previous highest number of positive tests in a single day, which was four.

Public health officials said they could not comment on the sudden spike and could not say if the cases were associated.

In a statement, a spokesman for Northamptonshire Public Health said: "Much like everywhere else, outbreaks are a feature of the pandemic and something all counties are managing on an on-going basis and action is taken accordingly.

"Details about individual settings will only be made public where there is considered to be a wider risk to the population. We would like to reassure the public that contract tracing is taking place to identify relationships between workplaces and this intelligence is acted upon."

A spokesman for Public Health England (PHE) also said they could not provide further information about the 12 cases confirmed in Corby on Tuesday and also said details about individual settings will only be made public where there is a wider risk to the population.

The PHE spokesman said Corby residents should remember key guidance:

- Keep two metres from others at all times

- Limit contact with those outside their household or bubble

- If you must meet with those outside your household or bubble, meet outside

- Do not share items with others outside of your household or bubble

- If social distancing at two metres is not possible, always use a face covering

- Avoid using public transport or car sharing. Wear face coverings if you must travel with others

- Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly for 20 seconds each time

- Work from home if you can
