Rowell Fair 1981 picture special

Coronavirus forced the cancellation of this year's fair...so take a look at the big day almost 40 years ago

Hundreds should have lined the streets of Rothwell this morning (Monday) for the town's annual Proclamation Day.

The event, part of Rowell Fair, features readings of the charter which granted the town permission to hold a fair.

This year's fair was cancelled in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ban on large gatherings, meaning there was no parade on horseback, rum and milk and 6am scuffles to try and disarm the halberdiers.

In a socially-distanced event bailiff Frank York kept the charter alive with a reading outside the church at 6am today.

Go back in time and take a look at our pictures from 1981 - God save the Queen and the Lord of the Manor!
