A nine-year-old Rothwell schoolboy has won a competition to name a new housing development in the town.

Persimmon Homes Midlands invited children from Rothwell Junior School to name its latest site, with student Cohen Rush suggesting ‘Woodland Valley’.

Cohen received a prize of a gift card and was invited to visit the development with some of his friends, to find out from site manager Jim Wilkinson how new houses are built.

The children were shown a range of construction vehicles in action and learned about the importance of safety on building sites.

Bridget Leder, from Rothwell Junior School, said: “Cohen was absolutely thrilled that his name was chosen. We encourage our pupils to take an active interest in their community and this seemed like a brilliant project to do just that.

“The children had great fun in thinking up names for the development and were excited when Persimmon put up their Woodland Valley signage boards.

"It is very rewarding to know they have played their part in the history of Rothwell.”

The development will have a selection of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes .

Claire Dearsley, sales director for Persimmon Homes Midlands, added: “We love to work alongside the communities in which we build, so we were thrilled when Rothwell Junior School helped name our new site.

“Cohen’s name was absolutely perfect for this site, inspired by the wonderful nearby countryside.

"All of the streets on the development have woodland themed names and we have carried this through into the design of our showhome, using lots of natural colours and materials.”
