Crumbling roads around Kettering’s ‘hamburger’ roundabout are set to finally be fixed – something a councillor has described as a massive relief.

It’s been hard to dodge the potholes for motorists travelling on the A43 and roads near the northern police HQ and Prologis business park, with craters seemingly everywhere.

But later this month the first phase of works to resurface the shocking carriageway will finally get under way, with completion of the programme set for mid-August.

Cllr Jim Hakewill (Ind, Rothwell and Mawsley), whose ward covers the roads, said: “I am really delighted that works are being programmed.

"It does concern me that these works have been on and off but when it’s done it will be a massive relief for people from Rothwell who travel into town and especially those warehouse operatives who work near it.

"They have had to put up with this awful road for almost as long as I can remember.”

One particular set of craters made it into our picture gallery of the worst potholes in north Northamptonshire earlier this year.

North Northamptonshire Council and its highways maintenance provider Kier say essential carriageway resurfacing and gully cleansing will take place on the A43, the Rushton Road and Weekley Wood Avenue, with work including the installation of a new high-friction surface.

All works will take place between 8pm and 6am – roads will be accessible as normal outside these hours.

Phase one will be from Monday, July 29, to Friday, August 2, with the first three nights under a full closure with limited access.

The first two nights will see outbound HGV journeys only and Wednesday, July 31, will see no HGV movements at all.

The remaining work in phases one and two – which takes place from Monday, August 12, to Tuesday, August 20 – will be with temporary four-way traffic lights, lane closures and diversions.
