Organisers have cancelled a popular farmers' market, but are hoping it won't be long before it returns.

The Higham Ferrers farmers' market is hugely popular with more than 20 stalls selling a wealth of local produce on the last Saturday of the month.

The event was due to place this Saturday (March 28) and while organisers had hoped it could still go ahead with people in need of many of the fresh items usually on sale, they have decided to cancel.

A spokesman for Higham Ferrers Town Council said: "We have taken the decision very reluctantly to cancel this one, as we feel we cannot maintain social distancing adequately and for safety of all involved.

"Some of the stalls had cancelled already and one stall has a shop in town anyway.

"We will review April's market in three weeks."

The monthly farmers' market held on the Market Square has been running for more than 17 years after being established in 2002.
