Corby firefighters will hold a Covid-compliant charity car wash to boost pandemic-hit coffers of a fund to help their colleagues injured in the course of their duties.

Red Watch will spend six hours up to their elbow in soap suds to raise money for the Fire Fighters charity on Saturday (October 10) and as well as the car wash, visitors will get a drive-thru look at the station.

Although guests will not be allowed out of their vehicles, organiser Craig Douglas, Red Watch Corby Commander for Northants Fire and Rescue Service, says firefighters have promised to make the visit special for children and adults alike.

He said: "We're going to dress the station the best we can to make it special for the children. It will be a drive-thru experience with cars being able to come in one way and drive out through the main doors like a fire engine. We will be spraying down the cars with fire hoses."

Red Watch will also be on duty that day but other firefighters will be supporting their colleagues if they are called to a shout.

He said: "Every year across the UK The Fire Fighters Charity runs a national campaign to raise money. One hundred per cent received goes to all staff from the fire service who need help with mental health issues to provide counselling or if someone has a serious injury they can stay at a residential centre for a treatment programme.

"The charity is losing £200,000 a month so everyone is pulling out all the stops to raise money."

Donations for the car wash will be cash thrown into a bucket but people unable to attend can donate through the Fire Fighters Charity website.

Mr Douglas added: "We usually get thousands of people coming to the station for our open days so we would like people to come along and support us.

"We will have music and people can see the fire station from their cars and we hope that Welephant will make an appearance too."
