Volunteers collected dozens of bags of litter as well as six shopping trolleys and three bicycles

A team of volunteers blitzed this Wellingborough beauty spot and collected more than 50 bags of rubbish in the space of just two hours.

The 25 'litter heroes' gave up their time to clean up Croyland Park in the town last weekend.

Their efforts resulted in more than 50 bags of litter, half a green bin full of recycling, six shopping trolleys and three bicycles being collected.

Sadly the haul of rubbish also included 25 needles, and these have been disposed of responsibly.

Jonathan Hornett from Wellingborough Eco Group, which organised the litter pick, told the Northants Telegraph: "The area has got more and more dirty.

"Last year, almost a year ago, we decided to do something about it with our first litter pick.

"We are still going and still keep finding heaps of litter."

In total, two van loads of rubbish weighing more than 500kg were taken away from Croyland Gardens, which is where Wellingborough Zoo used to be.

Jonathan is full of praise for the volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life who joined the litter pick, and said: "People are gladly giving up their time because I think they are getting something out of it too."

And their efforts didn't go unnoticed with people coming up to them to say thank you afterwards.

Jonathan said: "I think a lot of people are more aware of their surroundings because of lockdown and there is support for what we do.

"People are getting engaged with it, even the people who can't get out there and litter pick."

Wellingborough Eco Group, which has nearly 400 members on its Facebook group, holds a two-hour tidy up every month.

But this one was particularly special as it coincided with Keep Britain Tidy's 'Great British September Clean' with litter picking events taking place across the country.

Jonathan has thanked Wellingborough Norse for supplying the litter pickers as well as collecting the rubbish afterwards.

He also thanked Morrisons who allowed them to set up their recycling station in the supermarket car park during the litter pick.
