"We said we should go on a TV show together and Richard decided on Bargain Hunt. I said okay, never going to happen but let's do it anyway.

"We applied on a whim and then they said because we were of the same profession, they asked us to send a WhatsApp video to show our characters."

Jeff said they did a "crazy" video that saw them don Mexican sombreros while dancing and pausing to explain why they wanted to be on the show.

He said: "There was lots of stages, we then had a little screen test at the last stage at the Northampton Marriott Hotel."

The pair made it through all the stages and were told they would be appearing on the show.

Jeff said: "We filmed in September at the Peterborough showground for the antiques fair and then in Stratford-upon-Avon in October for the auction.

"It was so much fun. We let our characters take over, we were making everyone laugh.

"There were 10 couples there, they were filming five programmes on the day.

"We all have a WhatsApp group and we are going to meet up for a reunion."

Despite having filmed the episode months ago, Jeff and Richard have had to keep the results a secret.

Jeff said: "I've not even told my wife. Both our wives have been bugging us, I don't think either of us have kept a secret so well."

The pair enjoyed filming so much they have been thinking about other TV shows they can apply to appear on.

Jeff said: "Everyone says Pointless."

Instead, the Tesco managers, who have 32 years of experience at the supermarket between them, have applied to be on Supermarket Sweep.

Jeff said: "We'll hopefully do (an application) video in one of our stores, get a few trolleys before the shops open and give it a go!"

Jeff is now working from home after being identified as at risk from COVID-19, but said he is helping his employees out from home where he can.

He said the past few weeks have been "exhausting" but thinks the shops will be well managed and stocked for customers now.

Jeff said with so many people at home, their episode of Bargain Hunt could be on track to be the most viewed ever!

The episode airs tomorrow (Friday, March 27) at 12.15pm on BBC1.
