Northamptonshire cricket teams from the past: Retro picture special

Cricket is back up and running

As the local cricket teams prepare for the opening matches of the season, we are looking back in the archive at the cricket teams of the late 1970s and early to mid-1980s.

Traditional cricket games on a local level have not changed much over the years, with the idyllic sight of beautifully tended cricket pitches and the sound of leather on willow on a balmy summer day a constant down the ages.

Beside the promise of slap-up tea of sandwiches and cakes, the pitch can be the place to settle scores with local rivals taking the opportunity to thrash near neighbours.

Cricket has adapted for the modern television era with rule changes and even the terminology being made more 'accessible'.

But grass-roots cricket for the razzmatazz of new fangled forms of the game is fundamentally the same game.

Beside the promise of slap-up tea of sandwiches and cakes, the pitch can be the place to settle scores with local rivals taking the opportunity to thrash near neighbours.
